A digital storytelling project and a mobile app that mix technologies, narrative styles, and visual languages to engage younger generations and stimulate their questions about the future of the country and society.

Demopatia is an eight-chapter story that reflects on democracy through video reportages in comic book form with augmented reality inserts. Born from the collaboration between Mashfrog Creative Solutions, Zerocalcare, and ActionAid, it was presented in 2019 at the MAXXI Museum in Rome.

A multi-level story, in which Zerocalcare is the protagonist - partly in flesh and blood, partly an "avatar" in the comics - who accompanies the viewer-user on a journey that integrates linear narration with vertical insights entrusted to interviews with academics, intellectuals, and activists.

Comics and Augmented Reality

The "augmented" comic of Demopatia is the dynamic rendering in parallax of Zerocalcare's comics, which come to life offering the user a sense of immersion and interactivity. The levels of depth of the panels move based on the movements of the smartphone. The app uses the device's gyroscope for volumetric rendering, which also includes gif images that animate certain details of the scenes, also enriched by a sound design that distinguishes musical background comments and sound events related to specific actions.
