Mashfrog has developed two applications on the SAP platform for ANAS: Ispezioni Barriere and Censimento Gallerie L0, dedicated respectively to monitoring roadside barriers and cataloging tunnels. These two digital solutions streamline infrastructure control, allowing for real-time tracking and classification of critical road network elements.
The implemented solutions enhance data management, improve response times, and boost operational efficiency, contributing to more effective maintenance and increased road safety. This project marks a significant step forward in adopting technology for the care and modernization of infrastructure in Italy.
Ispezioni Barriere: 30,000 km under control
The Ispezioni Barriere app marks a step forward in the management of Italy’s road infrastructure. It offers a digital system that monitors over 30,000 km of barriers in real time, including guardrails and similar structures along the ANAS-managed network. ANAS technicians—or contracted external companies—use mobile devices to inspect the barriers and record their condition directly in the field, ensuring a constant and up-to-date flow of data.
Developed with the SAP Mobile Development Kit (MDK), the app features an intelligent algorithm capable of analyzing structural conditions and precisely indicating whether maintenance, replacement, or simple documentation is required. It serves as an unprecedented digital inventory, essential for managing a complex and constantly evolving network.
The app also stands out for its ability to evolve: it is progressively integrating the SAP PM (Plant Maintenance) module to automatically trigger maintenance notifications. This enables predictive and timely maintenance management, reduces risks, and helps ensure greater safety for road network users.
Censimento Gallerie L0: all tunnels in a single database
The Censimento Gallerie L0 app systematically and structurally digitalizes the inventory of approximately 3,300 tunnels along the ANAS network. Like the barrier inspection app, Censimento Gallerie L0 is built using the SAP Mobile Development Kit (MDK) and adheres strictly to a 34-page technical guideline issued by the Ministry of Transport, which outlines the parameters for data collection.
The project tackles the challenge of managing large volumes of complex data: each inspection involves completing detailed forms, recording technical specifications, and attaching specific documentation. Despite its complexity, the app streamlines and standardizes the process, centralizing all information into a single, easily accessible database.
Censimento Gallerie L0 is also preparing for a future integration with advanced systems that will automate data entry and management, optimize processing times, and increase the overall reliability of the inventory.
The development team included front-end and back-end developers, solution architects, and functional experts. Within just a few months, the team successfully delivered both apps, fully meeting ANAS’s needs and receiving positive feedback along with new development requests.
Two tools, one digital vision
Despite the differences between barriers and tunnels, both applications share a common vision: to make the national road network safer, more modern, and more efficient through technology. Barriers, which are more prone to wear and tear, require continuous and dynamic mapping; tunnels, already inventoried, benefit from unified and standardized management.
The two apps thus become key tools for a data-driven approach to infrastructure maintenance. They support a predictive model, enhance operational efficiency, and lay the foundation for a broader digital transformation—one that can optimize resources, reduce risks, and improve public service.
